Soaring at 10 meters per second — the world’s steepest cable car track is in the Swiss town of Stoos

Switzerland is a landlocked mountainous country, but what many don’t know is that the Alps alone account for two-thirds of its territory. Given this geographical setting, Switzerland has naturally developed a corresponding transportation system to move goods, and this unique feature makes local tourism especially distinctive — as visitors can ride the world’s steepest cable car here.

According to Lonely Planet, the world’s steepest cable car track has officially opened, located in Stoos in central Switzerland. The entire track is designed so that passengers can remain seated upright during the ride, without tilting their bodies due to height or gradient.

This cable car system, called the Stoos Bahn, took 14 years to build and cost €45 million. It connects Schwyz with the car-free town of Stoos, ascending to an altitude of 1,738 meters. The cable car travels at approximately 10 meters per second, with the total journey lasting around 2 to 5 minutes, breaking the record for the world’s steepest cable car track.

The cable car consists of four cabins, estimated to carry 136 passengers. It’s an engineering marvel and is expected to attract tourists to these towns in the future.
