Move into the most complete old dormitory complex in Tainan – “Beautiful Scenery” holds exhibitions in a century-old historic site

Known as the “Treasure of Tainan” and just a ten-minute walk from Tainan Railway Station, “Beautiful Scenery,” located on Alley 321, Park Road, North District, Tainan City, right next to the Tonglian Bus drop-off point “Arsenal,” is arguably the most well-preserved dormitory complex in Tainan’s old town area. Moreover, the oldest century-old frangipani tree in Tainan is planted at No. 37, where Beautiful Scenery is based. Even without viewing the exhibition, the plants themselves are already treasured antiques.

Beautiful Scenery aims to inject new energy into photography amid Tainan’s current enthusiasm for revitalizing old buildings. It continues to promote life aesthetics and cultural exchange between Chinese and Japanese photography through exhibition curation and venue rental, photography agency services, cultural and creative product sales, the “Stay Overnight with the Exhibits” program, the “Art Hotel” homestay, and the “Happy Farm” nature engagement activities.

With “city” and “travel” as its brand spirit, and photography as its narrative, Beautiful Scenery has, since its establishment in 2011, consistently explored the meaning of photography for creators and its significance in contemporary life through exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and events. The brand is committed to promoting life aesthetics and cultural exchange between Chinese and Japanese photography. In 2011, it successfully hosted the first solo exhibition in Taiwan by popular Japanese photographer Kawauchi Kota, titled “Mirai-chan.” In 2012, it organized the first Taiwan solo show by Japanese photographer Ihara Miyoko, titled “Misao to Fukumaru.” On March 21, 2013, it officially moved into the Tainan Municipal Historic Site – the Japanese-style dormitory complex “321 Art Zone,” originally part of the former barracks for officers of the Japanese Army’s 2nd Infantry Regiment.

Lin Pin-chun, curator and planner of Beautiful Scenery, said: “Tainan’s slow-paced lifestyle has always been something we long for. Now we finally have the opportunity to extend what we’ve been doing over the past two years to this place that feels like living in a Totoro house — ‘Tainan Beautiful Scenery 321.’ In the future, whether it’s exhibitions, product consignment, or the Art Hotel homestay and other activities, we hope the locals in Tainan will love it, and that it gives even more travelers a reason to visit Tainan!”

As for the opening exhibition “Travel + Photography = Beautiful Scenery!” photography group exhibition, the curatorial concept is: “We have held many photography exhibitions. Over the past three years, we have been organizing shows for others, but forgot to properly introduce ourselves. So, in the spring of 2013, we finally had a complete space, and through this venue, we want to properly introduce ourselves — ‘Hello, Tainan ! We are Beautiful Scenery!’ Through the works and perspectives of each member of the Beautiful Scenery team, we want to be your friends!” said Lin Pin-chun.
