Hong Kong-style dim sum has been popular in Taiwan for about 30 years, establishing a unique status in the food scene. Each restaurant has carved out its own niche and distinctive characteristics. Recently, online platform yam蕃薯藤 held a two-week voting campaign that sparked a fierce competition among Taiwan’s Hong Kong-style dim sum restaurants. On March 15, the results were announced, combining public votes and ratings from “secret foodies.” In the end, Chao Jiang Yan Restaurant, famous for its Cantonese cuisine, claimed the top honor.
Chiang Feng-kang, PR manager at Sky Media (yam蕃薯藤), pointed out that the “Delicious Hong Kong-Style Dim Sum” voting campaign ran for two weeks, attracting participation from 550,000 netizens. The final rankings were determined by a combination of public votes and scores given by the “secret foodies,” each accounting for 50% of the total. The secret foodies included food critics, food journalists, and food bloggers.
Chao Jiang Yan Cantonese Seafood Restaurant, which took first place, is known for its “gongfu tea,” paired with delicious Cantonese dim sum, and was unanimously recommended by the secret foodies. The second place went to “Furong Hotel Ah Ji Tea House,” led by celebrity chef Ah Ji, while Kaohsiung’s creative dim sum spot Hotel dùa Yuet Pin Chinese Restaurant secured third place.
Huang Kuo-te, the head dim sum chef at Chao Jiang Yan, which won the championship in the voting, said in an interview: “Dim sum is the soul of a Hong Kong-style dim sum restaurant. If you can’t even get the dim sum right, then you can’t call yourself a Hong Kong-style dim sum restaurant!” Chef Huang also specifically mentioned the restaurant’s “seafood tofu skin rolls,” which use a thicker-than-usual tofu skin wrapped around fresh shrimp, coated with “orange powder,” and then coated with a secret sauce before being deep-fried — resulting in a crispy texture.
