Flower Viewing / Fragrance Fills the Air — West Lake’s “Pomelo Blossoms” Have Bloomed Too

March is already a month of blooming flowers, and the pomelo trees in West Lake Township have also begun to flower. The pomelo trees lining the rural roadsides are gradually entering their flowering season, with their delicate white blossoms dotting the hillsides, filling the air with a refreshing fragrance that soothes the soul.

Pomelo trees are a specialty of West Lake Township, and the blooming period lasts from March to April. With over 167 hectares planted, this distinctive fragrance can be enjoyed across the township every year during this time — a unique and beautiful local phenomenon.

The “Fragrant & Beautiful Pomelo Blossom Season” event, organized by the local township office, is designed to let visitors from outside the area experience the charm of pomelo blossoms. Tourists visiting West Lake Township can hike up the pomelo-covered hills to admire the flowers, join free guided tours, or hop on township-organized shuttle buses that take them to explore various scenic spots around West Lake.

The West Lake Township Office will host the “Fragrant & Beautiful Pomelo Blossom Season” event this week on March 23 and 24 at the Hudong Multi-Purpose Activity Center. In addition to admiring the blossoms on the pomelo hill and taking the guided shuttle bus tour, visitors will be taken to explore Tao Die H, Datiedian, the Mazu Stone Sculpture, the Cultural Relics Exhibition Hall, the Secret Garden, Yifang Farm, the Hard Neck Band, and local legends. There will also be Hakka cuisine, stilt-walking, hoop rolling, and iron-can shaking — classic old-time games perfect for a weekend outing to West Lake to enjoy the “fragrance.”
