How much does a bowl of Buddha Jumps Over the Wall cost? Three thousand? Five thousand? Such prices are mere pocket change compared to the NT$22,800 price tag of the version at Shenwang Grand Hotel’s Trendy Collection. Think the price is too steep? Take a closer look at what’s inside, and you might just find it’s worth every penny.

A fine Buddha Jumps Over the Wall is not only the star of any reunion dinner table, but with its luxurious medley of delicacies, legend has it that its aroma is so enticing it can make even the Buddha scale walls. Every year, Taipei’s Shenwang prepares exquisitely selected Buddha Jumps Over the Wall for customers to take away, and this year they’ve taken it to the next level.

The “Premium Trendy Buddha Jumps Over the Wall” includes premium fish maw, top-grade caterpillar fungus, thick sea cucumber, golden shark fin, and whole abalone. The broth is first simmered all day with old hen, Jinhua ham, pork ribs, and hind leg meat, then steamed for eight hours with dried scallops, black-bone chicken, and other ingredients to fully release their essence. The result is a clear yet richly gelatinous soup with deep, complex flavors.

Although NT$22,800 is not an everyday price, making your own Buddha Jumps Over the Wall is both time-consuming and labor-intensive due to its complex preparation. That’s why the hotel has already received numerous inquiries — proving that there are still plenty of food connoisseurs at the top of the pyramid.

If the “Premium Trendy Buddha Jumps Over the Wall” is too extravagant, Shenwang also offers another more accessible option. The “Eight Delicacies Buddha Jumps Over the Wall” is made with a rich broth from slow-simmered old hen and Jinhua ham, paired with fresh caterpillar fungus, Chilean abalone, tendon, crispy pork ribs, pig trotters, shiitake mushrooms, goji berries, taro, chestnuts, and quail eggs. Carefully simmered to bring out a delicious taste, each bowl is priced at NT$5,800. While it doesn’t have as many premium ingredients as the “Premium Trendy” version, it’s still an utterly enjoyable treat for the average family.
