The “Yellow Rubber Duck” is a huge hit, sparking a “duck race” across Taiwan. The Keelung City Government recently launched a “like and sign” campaign titled“Yellow Rubber Duck Welcome to Keelung”to actively vie for the duck’s visit. Over 10,000 people have shown their support, with the main display site set to be Keelung Marine Plaza. Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu believes Kaohsiung Harbor is the most suitable location, while Tainan City also has city councilors urging the municipal government to pull out all the stops to bring the duck to Anping Harbor.

Designed by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, the “Yellow Rubber Duck” drew crowds at Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour, boosting nearby business and successfully creating a duck craze. Though the duck “fell ill” and deflated temporarily, it has now regained its adorable appearance after repairs.

Several counties and cities across Taiwan are vying to host the duck, with Keelung and Kaohsiung being the most proactive. Keelung City Council Speaker Huang Jing-tai recently initiated a “Bring the Yellow Rubber Duck to Keelung” petition campaign. The official fan page garnered over 600,000 views and 11,000 likes within days. Kaohsiung City Government is also pulling no punches, with Mayor Chen Chu stating that suitable exhibition sites, including Kaohsiung Harbor, have been faxed to the designer for reference.

The economic impact of the “Yellow Rubber Duck” cannot be underestimated. During its stay at Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour, it attracted over a million visitors. Standing about six stories tall and weighing 500 kilograms, the duck has traveled to 10 countries and 12 cities—including Sydney, Australia, and Osaka, Japan—over the past six years. As for where it will ultimately land, the possibilities remain open to the public’s imagination.
