Sleep for just 550 TWD a night at Hualien’s “Migratory Hostel,” where you can sleep in an art gallery!

Within a 5-minute walk from Hualien’s East Gate Night Market, there is a youth hostel that not only offers comfortable beds for travelers to rest but also provides a stage for artists. In addition to allocating a large space as an art gallery that showcases various artworks on a rotating basis, many paintings and art pieces are hung along the hallways, making guests feel as if they’re sleeping in an art museum. A night’s stay starts at just 550 TWD.

Unlike most youth hostels where the lobby serves as the check-in counter and common area, upon entering “Migratory Hostel,” over half of the first floor is designated as an art gallery. The hostel collaborates with artists from various fields on a non-regular basis, immersing guests in an artistic atmosphere even before they check in. A seating area is also set up in one corner of the gallery space, allowing travelers to interact with one another.

The ceiling at the end of the gallery is raised and extends through to the rooftop atrium, allowing natural sunlight to pour in. The three surrounding walls are adorned with various fish-shaped art installations, reflecting a sense of nostalgia for their former habitat and echoing the name “Migratory Hostel.”

“Migratory Hostel” offers several room types: double suites, double standard rooms, backpacker six-person dorms, and two backpacker four-person dorms — both of the four-person dorms are female-only. Each bed comes with a small lamp, power outlet, and storage locker, while the six-person dorms are mixed-gender. Among all room types, only the double suite has a private bathroom; all others share bathrooms.

For public spaces, Migratory Hostel has a sofa area on the first floor for guests to socialize, as well as a simple kitchen for travelers to use. Guests can also purchase drinks from the front desk if they wish to enjoy a drink.
