Kaohsiung’s Sanfeng and Liantan Commercial Districts Celebrate Dragon Boat Festival with Chef Ah Ji’s Zongzi-Making Demo

It’s that time of year again—time for zongzi and dragon boat races during the Dragon Boat Festival！ To create a lively and fun celebration for the people of Kaohsiung, the city’s Department of Economic Development has specially subsidized the Sanfeng Middle Street and Liantan Pond areas to host the “Zongzi Love Kaohsiung: Celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival” marketing event for the two commercial districts. As part of the Sanfeng Middle Street activities, Chef Ah Ji will be on-site demonstrating how to wrap zongzi and teaching the public how to prepare the festive dish using ingredients from the district.

Sanfeng Middle Street will kick off the festivities on the afternoon of June 2 with “Sanfeng Celebrates the Dragon Boat Festival: The Aroma of Zongzi Fills the Air,” followed by Liantan Pond’s “2013 Liantan Dragon Boat Festival: Zongzi Aroma & Old Town Adventure Challenge GO!” on June 8. These two consecutive weeks of commercial district events aim to immerse Kaohsiung residents in the festive spirit of the Dragon Boat Festival！

The Department of Economic Development stated that on June 2 at Sanfeng Middle Street, Chef Ah Ji will join the people of Kaohsiung in an early celebration of the festival！ He will demonstrate zongzi wrapping and teach the public how to use local ingredients to prepare the traditional dish.

Additionally, to allow more people to experience the meaning behind making zongzi, this year Sanfeng Middle Street has specially invited the locally famous “Shuangkou Zongzi” to prepare all the necessary zongzi-making materials and bamboo leaves for participants. Attendees simply need to pay NT$10 per zongzi for the ingredients, and instructors will guide them through the wrapping process. Once wrapped, the zongzi will be cooked on-site, allowing participants to take home up to 10 delicious zongzi. Moreover, the event will also provide 200 zongzi for low-income residents to collect.

Meanwhile, at the Liantan Pond event on June 8, four dragon boats will be available for citizens and tourists to experience the fun of “land boating.” The event also aims to introduce visitors to the Liantan Pond shopping district through entertaining games. Notably, the dragon boats are handwoven from bamboo, combining fun with eco-friendliness—each one takes three weeks to craft. In addition to the boating experience, the event site will also offer “Love Zongzi,” which will be distributed for free starting at 2 PM at the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas to citizens and visitors.
