Thailand has long been a beloved destination for travelers worldwide. Recently, the renowned travel advisory website TripAdvisor.com released its annual list of the world’s most loved travel destinations. Bangkok ranked first in Asia, while Chiang Mai came in sixth. There’s a good reason why travelers love visiting Thailand—it’s a melting pot of geography, religion, culture, and ethnicity, blending Chinese and Indian influences that never fail to amaze visitors.

Thailand borders Cambodia to the east, Myanmar to the west, and is adjacent to Malaysia and Laos to the south and north, making it the heart of Southeast Asia. The country is divided into five main regions: the mountainous and jungle-covered north, which is Thailand’s coolest region where elephants are common companions in daily life and work. Notable cities here include Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai; the northeastern region features a plateau terrain influenced by Cambodia and Laos, rich in cultural and historical heritage; the eastern coastal area is dotted with popular tourist islands such as Koh Samet and Koh Chang. The central region is a plain where Bangkok is located, while the southern region is an archipelago of beautiful beaches and seas, with famous resort islands like Phuket and Koh Samui.

Huang Liping, Senior Specialist at the Taiwan Office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, said:“If you ask me where the best place to visit in Thailand is, I’d say it depends on your personality. If you love greenery and mountain scenery, I’d recommend Chiang Mai. If you’re a city-type traveler who enjoys shopping and a bit of nightlife, Bangkok is the place for you. And if you’re all about beaches and the sea, I’d suggest Koh Samui.”.”

Huang Liping’s words highlight how Thailand’s beauty caters to diverse types of travelers, and its tropical monsoon climate means there’s no distinct season—making it a great destination year-round.

Urban Travelers: Welcome to Bangkok

If you love the urban vibe, welcome to “Bangkok.” The best way to describe Thailand’s capital might be a “city that blends the ancient and the modern.” It’s the political, economic, cultural, and transportation hub of the country. Fed by the Chao Phraya River, Bangkok enjoys abundant resources and has even been dubbed the “Venice of the East.” Despite rapid urbanization, Bangkok still preserves many historic landmarks, such as the magnificent Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, showcasing its rich history and religious heritage.

A Fusion of Culture and Scenery: Chiang Mai, the “Rose of the North,” a Cool Mountain Retreat

Known as the “Rose of the North,” Chiang Mai is located in northern Thailand at an altitude of 300 meters. With a comfortable and pleasant climate, it’s a renowned summer retreat, surrounded by mountains and often explored by elephant. Its isolated atmosphere gives it a unique charm. Influenced by its geography, Chiang Mai has a distinct character compared to other parts of Thailand. Its most famous ancient city, Wiang Kum Kam, is well-preserved thanks to its surrounding moat and has become a popular tourist spot.
