The Shuanglian Market Transforms into a Youth Hostel – Starting at Just NT$600 per Night

Taipei City is actively promoting urban tourism to boost its international visibility. This time, the municipal government has revitalized a market with a 35-year history—the Shuanglian Market—and transformed it into a youth hostel, which officially opened on the 17th. Rooms in the youth hostel are sold by “bed,” with the lowest price per bed set at just NT$600.

The Shuanglian Market was completed and opened in June 1978. Due to changes in the environment and shifts in business opportunities, the market's commercial activity moved elsewhere. To capitalize on the global trend of independent travel among backpackers and stimulate international tourism, the Taipei City Government decided to repurpose the second floor of the market and redevelop it. They invited Tongmao Hotels to operate the youth hostel while simultaneously renovating the building’s exterior and the market interior.

The youth hostel, transformed from the Shuanglian Market, features 87 rooms and 178 beds, and can be booked through the International Youth Hostel Federation. Rooms are divided into standard suites and youth hostel rooms. Suite prices range from around NT$1,600 to NT$2,400, and come with complimentary buffet breakfast. Youth hostel rooms are charged per bed. With a YH membership card, guests can enjoy a discounted rate of NT$600 per bed, but breakfast is not included.

Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-pin stated that during the trial operation phase, the youth hostel has already achieved an occupancy rate of over 50%. Additionally, its location is conveniently close to Ningxia Night Market and the Shuanglian Police Precinct, making dining and accommodation very accessible. Once the Airport MRT is operational, transportation will become even more convenient.
