The “Century-Old Railway Station” Comes Alive at Night: A Romantic 3D Light Show Illuminates Taichung

Landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House and the Swiss Parliament Building in Bern shine brilliantly at night, with dazzling light projections adding new highlights to the darkness. In recent years, light art festivals have been held on a grand scale around the world—in cities like Sydney, Singapore, Germany, and France—using light to brighten up urban spaces and historic sites after dark. To promote local culture and attract tourism, the 2017 Taichung Light Art Festival will breathe new life into the old railway station at night.

The Taichung Light Art Festival is dedicated to capturing the beauty of Taichung’s architectural light and shadow. Now in its fourth year, it has previously illuminated the century-old Lakeside Pavilion in the park and the artsy Taichung Music Center. Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Taichung Railway Station, this year’s festival moves its main event to the old station, featuring interactive projection installations.

Taichung Railway Station officially retired in October 2016. To express nostalgia and fond memories for the old station, light projections are used to highlight the historic site and recall the past. At the same time, in preparation for the 2018 Taichung Flower Expo, the festival will present a 3D light show and light theater under the theme “Floating Light • Floral Shadows,” along with other activities including urban games, mobile light art vehicles, platform-themed lighting, and interactive installations that recall the memories of the century-old station.
