Twenty thousand blue tiles build Portugal’s most stunning century-old train station

Those who have been to Macau are no strangers to Portuguese blue ceramic tiles, but being surrounded by twenty thousand tiles forming beautiful murals is truly breathtaking.

At São Bento Railway Station in Porto, Portugal, the exterior looks like an elegant church. But in fact, it is hailed as “the most beautiful train station in the world.” The original site was a monastery, which officially became a city train station in Porto in 1916 and has a history of over a hundred years. The station gained its fame thanks to Portuguese artist Jorge Colaço, who used twenty thousand tiles to depict the history, landscapes, and daily life of Portugal. As a result, the station has become an art museum, attracting tourists from all over the world every year to take photos.
