【Taiwan Railway Tour】The Unexpected Coal Town Origins of a Famous Cat Village?!

In recent years, Houtong Cat Village, selected by American CNN as one of the “World’s Six Best Cat Viewing Spots,” has become a familiar name to many. A quick online search reveals countless adorable photos of cats. But how much do you really know about this popular attraction?
Located near Houtong Station on the Yilan Line, visitors step out of the station and immediately onto the uniquely designed “Cat Bridge.” The bridge is adorned with photos and illustrations of cats, as well as cat-friendly climbing platforms. As you follow the paths where cats roam, you’ll find numerous themed shops centered around these feline stars.
Yet oddly enough, there’s also a coal mining museum park within the cat village? It turns out that when the Yilan Line’s Houtong section opened in 1920, the railway was originally built for transporting coal. Houtong was onceTaiwan’slargest coal mine!
