【Train enthusiasts, take note】Japan’s SL Ginga Train！Only runs for 80 days a year!

The SL Ginga was formerly the now-defunct “SL Ginga Doriko 0?”, which was later revived due to the need for regional tourism in the Tohokuregion, and has been back in service since 2014,Japan’sTohokuregion, running between Kamaishi and Hanamaki, operating for about 80 days each year.

The interior of the train was designed by Iwate Prefecture celebrity Miyazawa Kenji enthusiast Koji Ueda, with the theme “Traveling through Dreams”. Its retro, nostalgic locomotive design emits white smoke as it runs, while the carriages behind feature a modern yet romantic design — an unusual blend of old and new that gives it a unique charm.

Looking closer, you’ll notice that each carriage has a different theme — the first carriage is Scorpio, with special in-car events to match. The second, third, and fourth carriages are Sagittarius, Aquila, and Cygnus respectively, all displaying works and books by the author Miyazawa Kenji. Additionally, the interior design is mainly inspired by the Taisho and Showa eras, featuring gas lamps, stained glass, and crafts from Iwate Prefecture, offering a strong historical feel. The fare is relativelymore affordable compared to Kyushu’sSeven Stars train — with the ticket including reserved seating, it costs around 1,600 yen for a roughly 2.5-hour ride.

However, currentlyJapan’s“SL Ginga” tickets are not available for purchase overseas. To buy one, you can visit aTokyoor Shinjuku-based JR EastJapantravel service center or a nearby View Plaza travel service center.
