Tainan’s National Museum of Taiwan History: Its gray-and-white geometric architecture is surprisingly photogenic, and admission is free on weekends!

May 18 is International Museum Day. Not only has the National Palace Museum announced free entry that day, but the National Museum of Taiwan History in Tainan will also offer free admission on May 13 and 14, inviting the public to explore the stories and memories hidden deep within Taiwan’s history. If you’re looking for an intellectual getaway in southern Taiwan, May is the perfect time.

Located in the ancient capital of Tainan, the National Museum of Taiwan History features the Taiwan History Park, which combines culture and natural scenery. It also boasts two artificial wetland ecological ponds, “Carefree Lake” and “Affectionate Lake,” which function as 6,000-cubic-meter flood-retention basins. These ponds not only serve disaster prevention purposes but also serve as havens for resident and migratory birds. Additionally, Hope Hill, standing at an elevation of 22 meters and known as the “Highest Peak in Annan,” offers panoramic views of the park. The entire museum complex spans 20 hectares—perfect for spending an afternoon exploring.

Beyond the fascinating exhibits in the exhibition and education building, the unique “Photovoltaic Cloud Wall” is a highlight of the museum. Composed of 1,350 solar panels, it symbolizes the vast skies that early settlers crossed when arriving in Taiwan and also helps power the museum. The outdoor architecture, with its interplay of gray-white geometric lines and a strong sense of futuristic technology, has unexpectedly become a popular photo spot.

Additionally, to provide visitors with a better museum experience and services, the National Museum of Taiwan History has announced it will be closed for eight days from August 28 to September 4 for annual equipment maintenance. All exhibitions will be suspended during this maintenance period. Please be sure to note the closure dates to avoid a wasted trip.
