【Travel Fun Fact】Truly Eco-Friendly: Canada’s First Zero-Packaging Supermarket

In an era focused on sustainability, it's not just about reusing A4 paper, keeping the air conditioning at 25°C, or using one fewer plastic bag when shopping... now even travel is tied to green living.CanadaThe city of Montreal is home to the newest supermarket, Méga Vrac, which is following the trend by offering a zero-packaging shopping experience.

Méga Vrac offers over 700 products. Once inside, the categories of goods are similar to those found in regular supermarkets — from fresh produce to everyday household items. Whether it's individual fruits or liquid condiments, customers are required to bring their own containers for purchase.

Upon entering the store, you'll find all food items stored in transparent containers, while liquids such as oils and vinegar are kept in stainless steel vats. Packaging has been completely eliminated, and products are sold by weight using a self-serve bulk system.

In case you really forget to bring your own containers, the store also sells alternatives such as glass bottles or paper bags to make it convenient for all visitors. With local residents generating an average of 350 kilograms of waste per person per year, the city council recently voted to ban plastic bags and other single-use plastics starting in 2018, and also prohibited the use of plastic bottles and utensils. It is believed that their environmental awareness will continue to grow.
