I'm always skeptical when I see titles like “Instagram hotspot” or “hidden gem”—they usually turn out to be clickbait. But this time, seeing thisSpaincoastal city of Calpe’s cliffside “fortress” instantly won me over. Turns out this “La Muralla Roja” was designed and built in 1968 with the involvement ofSpanisharchitect Ricardo Bofill. To ensure a human-centered approach, they even consulted intellectuals from various fields like musicians, sociologists, and filmmakers for their input.

The building may look like a futuristic fortress from the outside, but its interior structure is incredibly complex. Even more unexpectedly, this maze-like design isn’t a tourist attraction—it’s actually residential housing. La Muralla Roja, inSpanish, means “Red Wall.” Amid its irregular geometric layout, you’ll find that it centers around a Greek cross shape, extending outward into three levels, with its 50 units connected by stairs, bridges, and platforms. The complex also features a rooftop pool, sunbathing terraces, and more, offering a Mediterranean-style lifestyle—very indulgent.

Beyond its unique architectural appeal, it also boasts bold colors. Upon closer inspection, the pink exterior actually varies in shade, enhancing visual harmony while feeling fresh. Standing by the high walls overlooking the sea gives a truly majestic feel. Inside, the predominant color scheme is blue, the opposite of red, creating a sense of unity and cohesion when looking out toward the sea.
