Meeting top-tier market demand: Gansu to build a theme park along the Silk Road

The ancient Silk Road boasts abundant tourism resources, including many world-renowned attractions such as the Mogao Caves, Mingsha Mountain, Crescent Lake, Yardang landforms, and the West Thousand Buddha Caves. However, the Economic Cooperation Bureau of Dunhuang City, Gansu Province, China, recently announced plans to develop a large-scale cultural and entertainment facility themed around the human history of the Silk Road, incorporating Dunhuang culture and the area’s natural environment—dubbed the “Silk Road Theme Park.”

According to China News Service, most existing attractions in Dunhuang are static and non-participatory sightseeing spots, lacking leisure, experiential, or entertainment elements, and there are no high-quality, refined leisure options available. As a result, they fail to meet the demands of top-tier clientele—prompting the development of the Silk Road Theme Park.

Tian Jianjun, Deputy Director of Dunhuang’s Economic Cooperation Bureau, pointed out that the ancient Silk Road offers rich tourism resources such as the Mogao Caves, Mingsha Mountain, Crescent Lake, Yardang landforms, and the West Thousand Buddha Caves. Visitors often spend a lot of time traveling to Dunhuang, yet these natural and historical sites can be explored in just a short period. Therefore, the Silk Road Theme Park—including an adventure park, Silk Road cultural experiences, accommodation and dining, campfire parties, a leisure sports center, and a cultural and entertainment hub—has been conceived.

The Silk Road Theme Park has a planned total investment of RMB 1 billion, covering an area of 1,000 acres. Global investment attraction is underway, and once completed, visitors will be able to experience the former prosperity of the Silk Road and Dunhuang’s local culture.
