Qijin Beach Has Grown Larger！Chen Chu: Building a Major Sandy-Tourism Island

With the completion of the Qijin Shoreline Protection Project, Qijin Beach has expanded 20 to 50 meters outward, increasing leisure space for visitors to sightsee and enjoy water activities. Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu said that to develop Qijin into a major tourist island, efforts include the renovation of the Qianhou Tourist Market, the opening of the Qijin Road Hotel, and the future construction of a Life Memorial Hall to improve overall tourism quality, creating a resort that blends ocean intimacy and ecological features.

Kaohsiung City recognized that coastal erosion caused by sea currents was damaging the shoreline’s view and landscape, further affecting marine recreational spaces. The city government allocated its own budget of NT$700 million to improve shoreline erosion along Qijin Beach, stretching 3.6 kilometers from Qijin Beach to the Wind Turbine Park in the south.

Yang Ming-chou, Director of the Public Works Bureau, stated that the restored shoreline spans approximately 3.6 kilometers. The project includes two artificial bay breakwaters, eight offshore breakwaters, one offshore dike, and the replenishment of about 1.12 million cubic meters of sand. In addition to protecting the Qijin shoreline from ongoing erosion and stabilizing water flow—making the beach less prone to being washed away by waves—the sandy area has expanded 20 to 50 meters outward, adding roughly 83,000 square meters of land.

Chen Chu pointed out that to develop Qijin into a major tourist island, projects include the renovation of the Qianhou Tourist Market, the completion of the new Qijin administrative center, the opening of the Qijin Road Hotel, as well as the successive completion of the new Qijin Hospital and fire station. In the future, a Life Memorial Hall will also be built to enhance overall tourism quality and shape Qijin into a resort that offers both ocean intimacy and ecological richness.

The recently opened Qijin Road Hotel—the first hotel in Qijin—is set to attract summer vacation crowds with its breathtaking sea views and sunsets, as well as Qijin’s renowned seafood cuisine.
