World-class travel photographer Raven’s Red Leaves Photography Lecture – Behind the Scenes

RavenHaving been shortlisted as one of the final 25 candidates for the “Best Jobs in the World” competition hosted by Tourism Australia in 2013, Raven is skilled at discovering hidden scenic spots. His works were recently selected as Judges’ Picks in the National Geographic Photo Contest. This time, the master’s appearance attracted a large crowd eager to exchange ideas.

To capture the essence of red leaves, Raven suggested focusing on three aspects: “light selection,” “lens usage,” and “photography techniques.” When it comes to light selection, the effects of front lighting and backlighting differ, but it’s essential to pay special attention to your camera’s metering and use exposure compensation to control the brightness of the leaves—otherwise, they might turn out too dark or overly saturated.

A macro lens can highlight the texture of leaves.

As for lens usage, Raven recommended using ultra-wide-angle, telephoto, and macro lenses to achieve different photographic effects. An ultra-wide-angle lens can capture the entire scene before you, emphasizing its grandeur and vastness; a telephoto lens allows you to zoom in on red leaves high up in the trees while avoiding crowds; a macro lens highlights the intricate patterns of the leaves.

Additionally, you can choose a suitable background for contrast, use a slow shutter speed to enhance motion effects, and apply various photography techniques to make your photos more unique and striking.
