The World’s Most Beautiful Library Opens with an Over-the-Top Design That’s Gone Viral

Just how much buzz can the opening of a library generate? Just take a look at the recently viral Tianjin Binhai Library. It has not only been described asChina’smost beautiful library, but even netizens in Japan are full of praise for it.

The library, which opened in October, is located in the Tianjin Binhai Cultural Center and is part of the center’s “Five Halls and One Corridor.” What’s truly stunning is the massive white sphere, over 20 meters in diameter, placed inside the atrium. Its surface—made of aluminum panels and LED lights—forms a multifunctional auditorium that resembles an eyeball, complemented by the building’s huge glass facade that creates an “eye socket” shape, making it look like a bright eye gazing out over Binhai. Walking into the atrium, you’ll be awestruck by the undulating, staircase-like “mountain” of white books. The stairs spiral from the floor all the way up to the ceiling, giving readers the feeling of “climbing” through a mountain of books.

To create the feeling of being surrounded by endless books, colored prints of book covers are specially displayed at heights that visitors can’t reach. The sci-fi-inspired design makes you feel like you’re in a movie scene. The 360-degree, zero-dead-angle concept was actually a collaboration between the renowned Dutch architectural firm MVRDV and the Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute. The six-story building took nearly three years to complete. Inside this glass library, in addition to books, there are also meeting rooms, offices, computer rooms, and more, creating a multifunctional space.
