There are so many delicious foods in Tainan, and I’ve tried no less than 100 eateries over the years. If a place is recommended by friends from all walks of life, I’d say it’s a “must-try.” That’s exactly what Phoenix Braised Snacks (《凤卤味》) is—less than a year old, yet already a must-visit. Even after just finishing dinner at Fuku Gyoza (《福丸烧饺》), I decided to go for a second late-night snack.

Short Review: A highly recommended late-night snack in Tainan—a heartwarming mom-style braised dish
The small shop is located on Kangle Street, near Chenggong Road. This area is full of classic Tainan eateries. Back in my student days, I loved coming here when there weren’t many tourists around. Spots like Mu Red Beans (《慕红豆》), Youyou Tomotomo, Guohua Street, and Haian Road were all within walking distance. Spend the evening here.
Phoenix Braised Snacks has no official address—it’s a shipping container set up by the owners that adds a splash of color to Tainan’s nightlife. Anything placed on this land instantly takes on a gentle charm. You know Tainan has that kind of magic. Spring turning into summer, April is the perfect time for cool nights. Just sit casually on a small stool, enjoy braised snacks, beer, and good company.

The menu prices are posted behind the counter. For Tainan braised snacks, the pricing is mid-range. As you get older, you’re willing to spend a bit more for quality food. It’s said their chicken noodle and spaghetti mains are also excellent, but my stomach had limited capacity—though that just gives me another reason to come back.

According to their Facebook page, this is a flavor passed down for over 30 years. The braising broth is made with more than ten kinds of traditional Chinese herbal medicines. “A mom’s taste that you’ll miss if you don’t eat it, and miss even more after you do.” Pick what you like, then take a number and wait for your order to be called before paying.

What surprised me was that they actually sell Beer Head, a Taiwanese craft beer brand I love, categorized by solar terms. I went with “Grain Rain”!

Homemade Taro | NT$25, Pork Belly - NT$50, Half Portion of Beancurd Skin - NT$15, Cabbage - NT$30I casually picked a few items, and the portion that arrived was surprisingly huge. A bit much for a second late-night meal, huh (laughs). But the ingredients all had a faint aroma of Chinese herbs, and the mild flavors didn’t feel heavy at night—slightly easing my guilt over eating so much.

Homemade Taro | NT$25, Pork Belly - NT$50, Beancurd Skin - NT$15, Cabbage - NT$30. I casually picked a few things, and the serving that came out was honestly quite large—for a second late-night meal, that’s almost too much (laughs). All the ingredients had a subtle fragrance of traditional Chinese medicine, and the mellow flavors didn’t feel heavy in the evening, slightly reducing the guilt of eating so much. The pork belly had an oily richness but wasn’t greasy, showing careful preparation of the ingredients. I could also tell from the “mom’s handmade taro” and other similar names that these were made by someone with a real personal touch. Aside from the pork belly, the taro also had a unique flavor—definitely worth trying. The taro had a rich taste and wasn’t overly starchy, plus the portion after the initial serving also had a great texture and flavor. If given the chance, I’d also like to try other meat options.

Hey, if you can handle spicy food, you definitely have to try the chili peppers from Phoenix Braised Snacks. They’re self-serve in the topping area at no extra cost—and these are hands down the most potent chili peppers I’ve ever had at a braised snack stall. The Sichuan peppercorn numbing effect is just too intoxicating, constantly teasing your taste buds and making your mouth water. They really elevate the entire braised snack experience.

Actually, the moment I parked the car, I knew I’d like this place. The atmosphere is incredibly well done. Great food doesn’t need a lot of fanfare—you can just tell it’s good when you taste it, especially that chili oil.
