Stroll Along Tainan’s Ancient Salt Canal & Enjoy the Scenic Green Tunnel

The Sicao Green Tunnel was once a hidden gem in Tainan’s Sicao area, but after being featured in the media, it has become one of the city’s popular attractions. Even so, the unique canal and green tunnel scenery remain well worth a visit.

The boarding point is located right next to the landmark “Tzuchiang Temple.” Built during the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty, the temple has a history of over 200 years. Visitors can also take the opportunity to explore it, as there is a large Dutch tomb behind the temple containing the remains of Dutch soldiers killed in battle against Zheng Chenggong’s forces.

The Tzuchiang Temple offers two boat routes: one is the Sicao “Green Tunnel,” which is the focus of this article; the other is the “Boat Tour of Taijiang,” which reportedly heads out to sea and features rich ecological and scenic commentary along the way. The Green Tunnel is actually an ancient canal, originally dug for salt transportation. The current canal stretch is about 750 meters long, with a round trip taking around 30 minutes. Throughout the journey, a guide provides commentary on the ecology and history, and the unique waterway scenery and wetland ecology along the route are the highlights of this trip.

How do you find the boarding spot? Once you’re near the Sicao seaside area, the towering Tzuchiang Temple is a highly recognizable landmark, and there are signs along the way. The current boarding location is right next to the Tzuchiang Temple in Sicao.

How to Get There:
Take Annan Road until the three-way intersection, then turn right onto Anbei Road. After driving straight for about two kilometers, turn right onto the “Sicao Bridge” to enter “Sicao.” After crossing the Sicao Bridge, drive straight for about 1.5 kilometers, then turn right to find the Tzuchiang Temple’s rubber raft boarding point for the Taijiang boat tour.
