South Korea’s Bijin Island is less populated than Jeju — CNN calls it “like time standing still”

Located southeast of Tongyeong City in South Korea’s South Gyeongsang Province, Bijin Island has been described by CNN (the U.S. news network) as being “like time standing still.” Its beautiful and unique natural landscape has earned it the affectionate nickname “Beauty Island” among Koreans.

“An island more precious than pearls” — this is the meaning behind Bijin Island’s name. It is one of the 99 islands within South Korea’s Hallyeohaesang National Marine Park. The island is connected by a single road linking two villages and is divided into two types of coastlines centered around this road: one side features soft, fine sandy beaches, while the other has a pebble shoreline. This unique scenery of two coexisting beach types caught the attention of CNN Travel.

According to CNN, the island is sparsely populated, with only about 30 residents. When boats pass by, only a faint outline of the coastline can be seen. The central road connecting the two villages allows residents to travel back and forth, yet no vehicles can be seen on either side. Elderly people relax under the trees, enjoying the breeze, while dogs run freely. CNN Travel described Bijin Island as a place “where time stands still” and “where time exists in its simplest form for the island.” Aside from enjoying the sea breeze, another popular activity is watching the sunrise and sunset.

Due to its geographical location, unlike other coastal areas backed by mountains or skyscrapers, Bijin Island offers a unique view where the sea, beach, sky, and clouds blend seamlessly. Additionally, the island features a 100-li (approximately 50 km) hiking trail called the “Coral Road,” where visitors can enjoy seaside views and gaze at other islands within the Hallyeohaesang National Park.

Although Bijin Island is often overlooked by travelers compared to more famous islands, the Tongyeong City Tourism Center stated in an interview with CNN that Bijin Island is a place where one can truly experience island life. Most islands present an endless horizon when viewed from the shore, often evoking feelings of loneliness, but Bijin Island’s unique geography of dual coastlines, along with its single connecting road between the villages, creates a sense of familiarity and closeness, like that of a friend, whether you’re standing on it or viewing it from afar.

Tongyeong Port in Tongyeong City provides ferry services to Bijin Island. There are three round trips daily (six during peak season), and the boat ride takes approximately 40 minutes to an hour to reach the island.
