Trick or Treat！Tokyo Disneyland and Universal Studios Japan Launch Halloween Month

As autumn arrives, besides the vibrant foliage, the most anticipated event for kids is the spooky yet fun “Halloween” on October 31st, when they can freely dress up, play pranks, and enjoy candies. This year, both Tokyo Disneyland, which is turning 30, and Universal Studios Osaka will kick off their respective “Halloween Months” in September, lasting over 50 days.

Halloween originated as a Western traditional festival, once known as “All Hallows’ Eve” or “Ghost Festival.” People believed that on this day, evil spirits and souls of the deceased would roam the earth. To ward off these ghosts, people would wear terrifying masks. The “Jack-o’-lantern” is a symbol of Halloween, typically made from a pumpkin and placed at the doorstep to scare away evil spirits—this is also why pumpkin-themed merchandise is so prevalent during Halloween.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, Tokyo Disneyland will hold the “Halloween Carnival” from September 9th to October 31st, spanning 53 days. In Tokyo DisneySea’s American Waterfront area, a brand-new “Halloween Skull Street Party” will debut, where skeletons will take to the streets to play music and even greet guests while they dine. Park staff in various Halloween costumes will hand out candy in both the American Waterfront and Lost River Delta areas. Guests just need to say “Trick or treat!” to receive a special Halloween sweet.

In addition to characters dressed in Halloween attire, Tokyo Disneyland will also launch an interactive experience called “Find the Pumpkins！～Let’s Find the Pumpkins！～”. Visitors can purchase a special event map (500 yen each) and join the pumpkin hunt. By following clues to correctly identify all hidden pumpkins among the whimsical displays, participants can claim an exclusive prize at the end.

Universal Studios Japan will run its “Universal Surprise Halloween” from September 13th to November 10th, divided into three parts: “Halloween Horror Nights,” “Carnival Parade,” and “Universal Wonderland.” Every Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and on October 31st (Thursday), from 6 PM until park closing, zombies will take over the park (excluding Universal Wonderland). This year, “Sadako from The Ring” will also make an appearance.

Kids who just want to indulge in sweets can head to the “Universal Wonderland” area, where they can shout “Trick or treat!” at seven themed doors featuring different anime characters. The characters will then appear carrying baskets full of candy for the children to grab. Please note that while the “Hello Kitty Bow Collection” has no age restrictions, other character appearances do.
