Popeye Village was originally built in just under seven months for the live-action film “Popeye.” Since Malta has no forests, all 19 wooden houses in the village were imported from the Netherlands and Canada, constructed in the style of 1920s architecture. Nearly 2,000 gallons of paint were used to color the buildings, aiming to recreate the vibrant hues of the cartoon’s “Sweethaven Village.” Workers also built a breakwater around the seaside village to protect it from environmental damage.

Today, Popeye Village has become a popular tourist attraction in Malta. Depending on the season or holidays, various activities are offered — such as a Santa Claus parade during Christmas, water trampolines and boat rides in summer, and regular outdoor barbecues, free wine tastings, and mini-golf for visitors.
