Explore Osaka and Kyoto’s Top Cherry Blossom Spots & Stay at a Seaside Hot Spring Ryokan

Before you know it, a new year is upon us, and soon the slumbering spring goddess will slowly awaken, bringing vitality to the earth. Spring is the season of blooming flowers, with pink and yellow blossoms adorning the world in vibrant hues. Especially during Japan’s cherry blossom season, it attracts countless domestic and international tourists eager to witness the beauty of sakura. Among the many cherry blossom viewing spots in Kansai, which ones are must-sees?

Kiyomizu-dera Temple, located in Wakayama Prefecture, is one of Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots and among the earliest to bloom in Kansai. Its flowering season runs from late March to mid-April, predominantly featuring Somei Yoshino cherry trees. These blossoms start off pale pink when they first open and gradually turn white as they fully bloom.

To admire Kiyomizu-dera’s cherry blossoms, you’ll need to climb 231 stone steps. Though a bit strenuous, the reward is well worth it. Along the way, you’ll find many cherry trees lining the path. Once you reach the top, a sea of blooming cherry blossoms comes into view, their branches intertwining as they proudly display their most beautiful selves, creating a pastel pink landscape. Additionally, you can gaze out over Wakanoura Bay amid this floral splendor, etching the scene of cherry blossoms, buildings, and the bay into your memory.

Maruyama Park, another of Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots, is Kyoto’s oldest park. It boasts around 680 cherry trees, with the most striking being the 12-meter-tall yG Weeping Cherry. Nearly 90 years old, this majestic tree stands like a king in the park. The cascading blossoms create a scene straight out of a painting, and when a gentle breeze blows, it brings a shower of falling petals—a truly enchanting experience.

Maruyama Park’s blooming season also falls between late March and early April. During this time, the park is especially lively, with bustling stalls and lively crowds. The park even offers cherry blossom-season-only dining areas, where you can enjoy authentic Japanese cuisine under the falling petals with family and friends—creating a romantic and unforgettable memory.

In Kansai, Ishigami Daiichi Hotel, touted as the hot spring ryokan closest to the sky in Ise-Shima, is a great choice for travelers. Perched at the highest point of the bay, it offers unobstructed ocean views. The hotel also features an open-air bath where you can soak in the hot springs while admiring the scenery—a double delight. Each day, 20 to 30 eagles fly by, and in the morning, the hotel provides eagle-favorite fish slices for guests to try hand-feeding these majestic birds. The dinner here is a meticulously prepared Japanese kaiseki course, featuring fresh seafood and seasonal produce that will surely delight your taste buds.
