The Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for family reunions. Aside from moon-gazing, barbecue and mooncakes with loved ones, are there other fun ways to enjoy the four-day break? A “New Ways to Celebrate Mid-Autumn” voting campaign launched by a well-known Taiwanese website invited netizens to brainstorm and vote for the top 10 must-do activities during the holiday.

Over a two-week voting period from August 26 to September 11, here are the top 10 must-do activities for the Mid-Autumn holiday as recommended by netizens:

1. Chaotian Temple’s “World Mazu Meets Beigang” Event – Yunlin
This event marks the first time Mazu deities from around the world and across the Taiwan Strait are welcomed to Beigang for a joint ceremony. On the 18th and 19th, in celebration of Mid-Autumn, special events include the Benkang Harmony Mid-Autumn Lantern Riddle Party and the Mid-Autumn Reunion Gala. Highlights include a food carnival, Nezha experience zone, fun dice games, lantern riddles, eight generals face-painting, folk performance troupes, and more – perfect for families and groups of friends.

2. Mandarin Golden Songs Night – Taipei
On Friday, September 20th, during the Mid-Autumn Festival, the fifth Mandarin Golden Songs Night at Legacy Taipei takes the stage as Taiwan’s only venue dedicated to classic Mandopop. Unlike typical nightclub EDM, carefully selected DJs will play timeless Mandarin hits, stirring shared memories and resonating emotions across generations.

3. Lihpao Land BBQ Party – Taichung
Lihpao Land celebrates the Mid-Autumn holiday with its “All-Star BBQ Bash.” The event features a rich lineup including a starry night fireworks show, a glow-in-the-dark parade, and of course, a wide variety of barbecues. Enjoy all-you-can-eat barbecue with diverse cuisines such as Russian-style grills and Tashkent pork skewers. There’s also a special “3 Skewers for NT$100” combo, a East vs West cooking showdown, plus dazzling nightly fireworks shows with shapes kids love – Doraemon, Peter Rabbit, hearts, smiley faces, stars, jellyfish, and more. Don’t miss the glowing water parade to celebrate the festival together.

4. Moon Crown Mid-Autumn Gala – Taichung
On Mid-Autumn Day, September 19th, at the Wuneng Outdoor Theater in Taichung’s Cultural and Creative Park, renowned performance troupe Jiutian Folk Arts and popular dance group Black Angle will deliver stunning shows. There will also be street performers and many celebrity guests, making for an electrifying, unforgettable evening.

5. Kaohsiung Jade Pomelo Beer Festival – Kaohsiung
During this year’s four-day Mid-Autumn break, the “Kaohsiung Jade Pomelo Beer Festival” will be held at the Old Iron Bridge Wetlands Park in Dashu District. Organized by the Kaohsiung City Agriculture Bureau, this event features jade pomelos transformed into natural juice, combined with beer for the first time. From 11 AM to 9 PM, enjoy ten non-stop hours of fun. Beyond creative cocktails and beer-pouring contests, enjoy live performances by artists like Jia Jia, Dai Ai-ling, and Show Lo, guaranteeing a lively party atmosphere.

6. Pomelo Fun & Mid-Autumn Joy in Wushantou – Tainan
The Taiwan Chianan Irrigation Association is hosting the “Pomelo Fun & Mid-Autumn Joy in Wushantou” series from September 19th to 22nd. Each day at Wushantou Reservoir includes an educational tour to learn about the reservoir, plus family-friendly painting events to encourage parent-child bonding for a sweeter Mid-Autumn.

7. E-DA World “Mid-Autumn Madness – Fun in the Park, Fragrance of Pomelos” – Kaohsiung
During the Mid-Autumn Festival, E-DA World Outlet Mall is launching exclusive pomelo-themed activities. These include a baby pomelo-carrying contest and a kids’ pomelo-peeling competition, where winners can take home great prizes. Of course, there’s also a barbecue zone, and the shopping mall is offering discounts on a range of international luxury brands.

8. National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts Midnight Mid-Autumn – Taichung
On Mid-Autumn Day, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts stays open late, offering a unique museum-visiting experience under the moonlight. From theatrical performances to soothing music concerts, the children’s activity room also hosts Mid-Autumn-themed art workshops, making for a rich and diverse “Mid-Autumn Night at the Museum.”

9. Taipei Zoo “Moonlit Stroll” – Taipei
To encourage outdoor activities and foster a peaceful Mid-Autumn atmosphere, Taipei Zoo is hosting a “Pomelo Lantern Contest” in its Aquatic Ecology Recreation Area. Inspired by aquatic life, visitors are invited to carve creative designs into pomelos, strengthening bonds between citizens, animal adopters, volunteers, and staff.

10. Kinmen Mid-Autumn “Top Scholar’s Cake” Game – Kinmen
The “Top Scholar’s Cake” game is a Kinmen tradition with over 300 years of history, transforming dice-rolling into a fun, motivational game symbolizing academic success. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, families and friends gather to roll the dice, competing lightheartedly for the chance to become the “top scholar.” It’s entertaining, educational, and brings everyone closer.
