Aiming to convey genuine human connection to the land – a short film shot in the "oyster fields"

Taiwan’s most authentic story, even visible in local tourism experiences. The Tainan City Government Tourism Bureau has launched a new short film titled “Oyster Boy. Not Difficult,” capturing the spirit of the rural coastal saline-land region, Taiwan’s most important international-level Sihcao and Qigu Wetlands, reflecting the most real stories from the locality. It is hoped that through the release of this short film, coupled with the Black-faced Spoonbill bird-watching season, a wave of interest in west-coast tourism will be sparked.

The short film “Oyster Boy. Not Difficult” is 21 minutes long, and its story is adapted from the real-life journey of Tainan youth “Oyster Boy” Mr. Huang Yicheng. Faced with a life-changing decision, Oyster Boy resolutely returned to his hometown of Qigu to raise oysters. Amid various pressures, he overcame numerous challenges and proved everything through action. Every morning, Oyster Boy puts on his rain boots and canvas clothing, steps into the oyster fields, and step-by-step learns oyster farming and harvesting from his grandfather. He even developed a new sales channel, selling freshly grilled oysters directly from the source at night markets.
 
Director Chen Wen-bin stated that this film depicts the relationship between people and the land. The story of Dr. Wang Jinhe, who returned to his hometown and devoted himself with great sacrifice and contribution, is deeply moving — this is the spirit of the people of Tainan, and also the core value of this film. The film stars actor Wang Boxuan (as “Oyster Boy”), Lee Siang-lin (as “Oyster Boy’s” girlfriend Xiao Han), and Tsai Ming-hsiu (as “Oyster Boy’s” father). It was filmed on location at the Qigu Black-faced Spoonbill Bird-Watching Pavilion, the Black-faced Spoonbill Conservation Center, Jingzihjiao Tile-Pan Salt Fields, Beimen Blackfoot Disease Memorial Museum, Luermen Our Lady of Snows Temple, and Wusheng Night Market. The film presents an uplifting and inspirational atmosphere, showcasing the creativity and perseverance of the people of Tainan, and combines the beautiful west-coast scenery of Tainan with the distinctive feature of “delicious food delivered fresh.”
