The most popular summer activity in eastern Taiwan, the "East Coast Tribal Work Holiday," is now open for registration！ With four years of accumulated experience, this year the tribes are taking on the challenge of organizing the work holiday themselves. The first wave of participating tribes includes the Jinguang Tribe, the Bisi-lian Tribe, and the Xin-she Tribe, with registration officially open starting today.

The "East Coast Tribal Work Holiday" has been held for four years across 29 sessions, serving as an important window for many volunteer travelers to connect with tribal life, as well as a friendly platform for tribes to share their culture and stories. This year, the East Coast National Scenic Area Administration encourages tribes to explore new organizational models—tribes independently propose, actively plan, and fully manage the events. Aside from professional advisors and photographers, all on-site staff will be from the tribes themselves. This approach aims to boost the tribes' self-driven capabilities and promote sustainable local development.

This year’s Jinguang Tribe work holiday will continue to expand the visual identity of the tribe by expanding the mural painting on the outer ring road walls featuring its signature colors of orange, white, and gray. It also includes the summer solstice-exclusive “Welcome the Morning Sun at the Tropic of Cancer,” where participants sing traditional songs and call for the sunrise, welcoming the first light of summer. Additionally, you can enjoy the authentic local “Pacific Table,” where Amis age-class cultural concepts are integrated, allowing volunteers to learn about the warrior spirit and skills, and take on the “Malakacaway Warrior Challenge” together.

This year, the Bisi-lian Tribe, led by local youth, will work with volunteers to give a fresh look to the “Handcrafted Driftwood Sheep,” restoring its vibrancy and color. In addition, the youth will teach volunteers how to play the pawpaw drum, sing around a beach bonfire, and even take a real canoe ride out into the Pacific to get up close with the fish schools near the offshore fishing grounds—experiencing the dialogue between the tribe and the ocean.

The Xin-she Tribe will, under the guidance of teachers such as Swallow and Duwak from the local studio Guangzhiwu, use the natural material “bamboo” to combine art with the landscape on the coastal terraces of the Xin-she Peninsula, creating an artistic corridor that showcases the craft culture and artistic atmosphere of the Xin-she Tribe. At the same time, through a Kavalan cultural walk and peninsula storytelling, participants will enjoy a Kavalan cuisine feast in the terraces and learn about Kavalan history and culture.

The "East Coast Tribal Work Holiday" is now open for registration across three sessions. The first session, the summer solstice-exclusive "030 Paint Jinguang Together," will run from June 16 to June 19, followed by "031 Be with Bisi-lian" from July 28 to July 31, and "032 Weave Bamboo with Batonghong'an" from August 24 to August 27.
