Taiwan’s East Coast, particularly Hualien and Taitung, exudes a uniquely captivating charm, drawing many travelers seeking to unwind and rediscover themselves. When it comes to Hualien, how can you miss the sea? Located beside Highway 11 along Hualien’s coastline, Dashibizi Mountain offers sweeping views of the azure Pacific Ocean. With well-maintained trails that let you get a good workout without overexertion, you can reach the summit in just 30 minutes.

Located beside Highway 11 along Hualien’s coastline, Dashibizi Mountain has a trail that stretches 910 meters. The path mostly consists of stone steps and wooden sleepers, with rest shelters available. It takes about an hour to complete the round trip. Feel the sea breeze, enjoy the ocean views, and gaze out at the stunning blue coastline of the Pacific – the scenery is incredibly beautiful and enchanting.

After a 30-minute climb to the summit, at an altitude of about 150 meters, you’re greeted by endless steps, mountain greenery, blue skies, and white clouds – all the elements of a perfect painting. The effort of the hike instantly feels worthwhile, as the view leaves you feeling it was all absolutely worth it.
Other places known for their mountain staircases include Alishan’s Er Yanping Trail and Nantou’s Jiujifeng Forest Trail. But Dashibizi Mountain in Hualien has the added bonus of a naturally stunning blue coastline. As you hike the trail surrounded by mountain greenery – possibly plants cultivated by indigenous peoples like wild onions, lilies, and gardenias – every corner is a picturesque scene. And then there’s the gentle sea breeze from the Pacific, offering a “unique experience” found only in the East Coast region.

Next to Dashibizi Mountain is the Sizihwan Coastal Recreation Area. The parking lot by the roadside serves as the trailhead for Dashibizi Mountain, with entrances at both the north and south ends. Just park your car and you can start hiking the trail – it’s super convenient.
