The “Flower Makeup” Grand Parade: Celebrate Together at the Hsinchu International Drum Art Festival

Halloween isn’t only a Western tradition. Taiwan’s version of Halloween kicks off in Hsinchu on the 19th with the Hakka cultural “Flower Makeup” grand parade, which is rich in Hakka heritage and one of the well-known ways the Hakka community celebrates October. Like Halloween, it involves dressing up, putting on makeup, and joining in the festivities.

The “Hsinchu County International Drum Art Festival,” listed as one of the 12 major festivals in Hakka communities, begins on the 19th at the Hsinpu New Wufu Hakka Cultural Preservation Area in Zhubei City, ushering in a nine-day tourism event. The opening performance will feature various “drum” groups, including the “Native American Indian Band,” the “Shaanxi Hancheng Xinggu Arts Troupe,” and Japan’s “Chaya-machi Oni-daiko,” all delivering spectacular shows. There will also be a street parade themed around “flowers,” featuring participants with painted faces, flower drums, and flower umbrellas.

Additionally, you can take part in challenges with the chance to win 3C products such as iPads and HTC Ones. This year’s theme, “Dancing in October, Drums Resounding at New Wufu,” celebrates this important festival that blends preservation with celebration. Thirty domestic and international groups will deliver an exciting performance transcending borders, languages, and cultural traditions.
