Taiwanese street food makes its way into five-star hotel buffets — stinky tofu and Fucheng rice cakes are now on the menu

Taipei’s Wanhua district welcomes a new landmark, the Taipei Caesar Metro Hotel (Caesar Metro Taipei), operated by the Caesar Hotels chain, which officially opened on November 24. The hotel’s Baiyan Buffet has launched a selection of local Taiwanese night market snacks starting today, featuring a special “made-to-order” section that offers quintessentially Taiwanese dishes such as Shenkeng stinky tofu, Gangshan mutton hot pot, Fucheng rice cake, black pepper steak on iron plate, Yilan satay squid soup, and crab roe monkfish tofu.

Some Taiwanese street foods are actually quite extraordinary. Take the Gangshan mutton hot pot from Kaohsiung, for example. The chef uses over twenty types of Chinese medicinal herbs along with an exclusive secret recipe, plus the large bones of a whole sheep, and simmers them carefully for eight hours to produce a broth that is sweet, savory, and smooth. The dish features carefully selected locally sourced lamb leg meat with skin and bone, offering a Q-textured bite that’s rich in collagen but not greasy.

To celebrate the opening, the Baiyan Buffet offers one free meal for every four diners at lunch and dinner. Wanhua residents can also enjoy an exclusive 15% discount, even if they don’t have a group of four. Additionally, the hotel’s Chinese restaurant, Jia Yan, is offering a 15% discount. However, these promotions are only valid until December 29.

For accommodations, Taipei Caesar Metro Hotel, located near commercial districts, targets Japanese and Korean guests. The hotel has a total of 745 rooms. The lobby is designed with marble columns and features murals representing Taiwan’s rich marine resources, including underwater landscapes and views of Guanyin Mountain, welcoming guests upon arrival. The rooms are divided into three styles — light industrial, luxurious, and elegant — across seven room types including presidential suites, deluxe rooms, premium rooms, and standard rooms. Each room boasts a window with scenic views. Rooms facing north offer views of Guanyin Mountain and the Tamsui River, while those facing south overlook Zhongyong and Xindian River.
