Hong Kong’s No.1 Noodle Shop – Kau Kee Beef Brisket Has Been Fragrant for 90 Years

Kau Kee Beef Brisket is a favorite among big stars such as Leslie Cheung, Tony Leung, Carina Lau, Chow Yun-fat, Stephen Chow, Eason Chan, and Chapman To. Its tender beef brisket in clear soup served with egg noodles (similar to spaghetti) is arguably its signature dish, ranking as the No.1 restaurant in Hong Kong for many food lovers. It is also highly praised and strongly recommended by major media outlets and food influencers.

With a history of 90 years, Kau Kee, often simply called “Kau Kee,” is the only beef noodle shop of its kind in Hong Kong, and indeed the world. In May this year, it was awarded three accolades by the Hong Kong dining website OpenRice: the Best Western/Central District Restaurant, the Best Congee & Noodle Shop, and the Grand Award for Accumulating 300 Positive Reviews.

Noodle dishes can generally be divided into three main categories: noodles, meat, and broth or sauce. The various combinations of these three categories result in prices ranging from HK$24 to HK$110 (approximately NT$96 to NT$440). The most expensive is the HK$110 Superior Beef Noodle in Clear Soup (with “superior broth” referring to clear soup), the cheapest is the Superior Clear Soup Egg Noodles, while the highly acclaimed Beef Brisket in Clear Soup with Egg Noodles is priced at HK$38 (approximately NT$152).

For the three main categories—noodles, meat, and broth or sauce—there are four types of noodles to choose from: rice noodles, thick noodles, egg noodles, and rice vermicelli. For meat, you can pick from three options: beef brisket, beef slices, or beef chunks. Broth and sauces include superior broth, oyster sauce, and curry.
