Yayoi Kusama’s works are more captivating than the Rubber Duck — Hofman: "Very interesting"

The Rubber Duck arrived in Taoyuan, attracting tens of thousands of visitors on its first day. However, besides the duck, another must-see is Yayoi Kusama’s dotted artwork “Footprints of Life,” just a 20-minute walk from the duck exhibition area. Fifteen dotted installations of varying sizes float on a pond, their reflections shimmering in the sunset water — many visitors couldn’t help but exclaim, “It’s even better than the duck.” The creator of the Rubber Duck, Hofman, also visited Kusama’s installation and said outright, “Very interesting.”

Created by renowned Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama, “Footprints of Life” is one of the most sought-after classic artworks besides the Rubber Duck. Kusama is known for using high-contrast polka dots along with mirrors to extensively cover various surfaces such as walls, floors, and canvases. For this “Land Art Festival” exhibition, her piece “Footprints of Life” features multiple peach-colored inflatable sculptures covered in black polka dots, arranged into bold and eye-catching compositions that echo the richness of Xinyi’s rural landscape.

The artworks are installed to float on the pond, gently shifting on the water’s surface with changes in light and ripples. A total of 15 pieces of varying sizes all feature a peach-pink base adorned with black polka dots, designed in the shape of clustered mushrooms. Placed on the pond, they create a striking visual contrast. Visitors who viewed Kusama’s works also commented, “Kusama’s art is more fun than the duck.”

The creator of the Rubber Duck, Hofman, personally came to appreciate Yayoi Kusama’s works. After hearing an explanation, he gazed intently at the installations on the pond and remarked that Kusama’s works are interesting, colorful, and incredible.
