Shanzhuku Transforms into a Beautiful Park — Nangang Shanshui Green Ecological Park Officially Opens

Located in Nangang, the former landfill site known as "Shanzhuku" has become history. On the 27th, it officially reopened as the "Shanshui Green Ecological Park." Many facilities within the park utilize recycled resources, aiming not only to become a new landmark of Nangang and a new leisure option for residents but also to promote the importance of environmental conservation and resource recycling.

Covering an area of 21 hectares—equivalent to about 10 Taipei Domes—the Shanshui Green Ecological Park is the largest park and green space in Nangang. Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-pin, who attended the park’s opening ceremony yesterday, stated that besides strong government efforts in redevelopment, public cooperation in reducing waste and recycling resources was also essential. This collaboration enabled Taipei to achieve its goal of zero landfill and full resource recycling by the year 100 of the Republic of China (2011), transforming this “urban sore” from a source of foul odors into a beautifully revitalized ecological park.

The Taipei Environmental Protection Bureau also noted that Shanshui Green Park is the most ecologically immersive recreational site in the suburbs of Taipei. Surrounded by mountain forests, the park features natural-looking streams, areas of sweet gum woods, and tung blossom tree groves. Due to successful restoration efforts, it has now attracted protected animal species such as crested goshawks, Taiwan blue magpies, and collared scops owls to make their home in the park.

Many facilities in the park have been reconstructed from originally abandoned buildings or items. For example, an old car wash platform has been transformed into a coffee cabin for public rest; discarded bicycle wheel rims have been repurposed into hoops for a rolling hoop game enjoyed by both adults and children. The bureau also specially collected and repaired bicycles, offering them free for public use. The park’s visitor service center was rebuilt from a former resource recycling plant.

The park also features an observation deck where visitors can gaze at the mountains and urban districts of Neihu during the day and admire the glittering night lights of Taipei City, including views of the traffic flow on the freeway, at night.
