The annual Christmas light displays on London’s Regent Street, which attract large crowds from around the world, officially kicked off with a lighting ceremony by international celebrities and directors on the evening of the 9th (UK time), as they joined the world in proclaiming “Merry Christmas!”

Now designated as part of the Regent Street Conservation Area, the street is named after the Prince Regent of Britain (later King George IV). Every building along the street is listed as a Grade II or higher historic structure. Originally a road network connecting the 17th and 18th centuries, it has now become London’s renowned shopping destination for luxury brands, with its famous Christmas light installations being one of its most well-known features.

This year’s Regent Street Christmas lights and store decorations are themed around DreamWorks’ upcoming animated adventure film “Mr. Peabody & Sherman,” set to be released by the end of the year. In addition to performances and autumn/winter fashion shows, the lighting ceremony featured Emmy Award-winning actor Ty Burrell, acclaimed Hollywood director Rob Minkoff known for works like “The Lion King,” and British singer Leona Lewis jointly switching on the lights.

The decorative lights on Regent Street are expected to remain on display until after the New Year in 2014. (News source: Central News Agency)
