The "Maple" Craze Isn't Over Yet – Osaka Castle and Expo Park Showcase the Last Burst of Deep Autumn's Vivid Red

Winter has arrived, but in Osaka, located in Japan’s Kansai region, the autumn foliage "maple" craze is just now at its peak. The historically significant Osaka Castle and Expo Park are being tinged with splashes of vivid red, as if lingering in the embrace of autumn.

Osaka Castle, which stands quietly within the embrace of its moat, is located in Osaka Castle Park. Once the residence of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, it has endured through the Edo and Meiji eras, natural disasters, wars, and the fires of World War II, undergoing countless reconstructions and renovations. The Osaka Castle we see today is a 1930 reconstruction made of reinforced concrete, known as a "restoration," and was designated by the Japanese government in 1997 as a "Registered Tangible Cultural Property." From above, the vast red hues spread from the outside inward, crossing the moat and climbing over the massive stone walls built from huge rocks. Deep autumn, with her own hands, has painted this magnificent "urban oasis" in her colors. From afar, one might even think the castle tower itself has taken on a faint red tint.

As the most important milestone commemorating Japan’s development in 1970, Osaka Expo Memorial Park is also stepping into the final stretch of deep autumn, displaying its most stunning "maple" scenery. Originally the exhibition site of the 1970 Japan World Exposition—before the Shanghai World Expo, it was the world’s fair that attracted the most participating countries and visitors—the exhibition grounds were later transformed into a memorial park.

The most recommended maple-viewing spot within the memorial park is the Natural Cultural Zone. With murmuring streams flowing by, the riverside offers a maple-red spectacle reminiscent of a movie scene. The slender leaves cling to the branches, glowing brilliantly even before fully transitioning, as if time slows down within this serene green space. Such natural beauty can continue until early February before it too must come to an end.
