Kaohsiung Wins 10 Awards at 2013 International Awards for Livable Cities, Ranking First Globally

The winners of the 2013 International Awards for Livable Cities, held recently in Xiamen, mainland China, were announced, with Kaohsiung City taking home a total of 10 major awards — 4 gold, 3 silver, and 3 bronze — making it the top-awarded city globally. These include projects such as the construction of the World Trade Exhibition and Convention Center and the Hama Star Railway Cultural Park, as well as the revitalization of Qijin Coast and the Derlega Bridge, all of which have received international recognition.

Kaohsiung swept 4 gold, 3 silver, and 3 bronze awards. The gold award-winning projects include:the World Trade Exhibition and Convention Center, the Qijin Coastline Protection Project, the Derlega Bridge (including the Maolin Totem and Wanshan Rock Carvings), and the Hama Star Railway Cultural Park.

In addition, three planning projects — the Zhongzheng Star Bicycle Bridge, the Sustainable Building Environment Renovation Action Plan, and the Moon World Scenic Area — won silver awards; while the Gushan District (Gushan Green Town – Lohas New Town), the Dashu District (Strolling Through Beautiful New Countryside), and the Hongmaogang Cultural Park also received three bronze awards.

The International Awards for Livable Cities, also known as the “Green Oscars,” are jointly organized by the United Nations Environment Programme and the International Parks Association. They evaluate cities’ contributions to sustainable development and environmental awareness, covering various aspects including urban landscape, community environmental management, ecological construction, resource utilization, the relationship between people and nature, and environmental sustainability.
