The colorful season has arrived—Miaoli’s Dahu Strawberry Festival kicks off on the 14th

December marks the peak strawberry season every year. On the 14th, Miaoli County’s Dahu will launch the two-month-long “Joy on the Strawberry Bough – Miaoli County 2013 Strawberry Culture Festival” series of events, which also includes fun runs, stargazing concerts, and New Year’s Eve parties, aiming to attract tourists to visit Dahu and experience the joy of strawberry picking.

Affected by global warming, the strawberry ripening period has been delayed, but after the recent cold front, the fruits are gradually forming. The festival will kick off on the 14th with a “Strawberry Festival Fun Run,” where participants are required to wear strawberry-themed outfits. The route runs from Dahu Winery to the intersection of Wenshui and the Shei-Pa National Park Administration Office, covering a round-trip distance of about 5 kilometers.

Dahu Township is famous for its strawberries and is known as Taiwan’s “Kingdom of Strawberries.” With around 500 hectares under cultivation, the main varieties are Fengxiang and Xiangshui. Xiangshui strawberries taste like cucumber, with a firm and slightly crunchy texture, while Fengxiang strawberries are more widely favored in the market, known for their plumpness, sweetness, and juiciness.

Located in Dahu’s Xinkai Village, “Brother Afu’s Farm” began experimenting with organic strawberry cultivation on a plot of one and a half acres this year. Farm owner Afu said that with ample sunlight this year and large diurnal temperature variations, the strawberries are growing particularly well and are gradually entering the harvest period. He expects a peak harvest in about two weeks and welcomes visitors to book strawberry-picking sessions.
