Ring in the New Year in the Embrace of the Harbor – Kaohsiung Countdown Fireworks Cruise Opens for Booking on the 12th

Every year as the old and new years alternate, cities across Taiwan pull out all the stops to stage grand countdown galas to welcome the new year. To allow the public to comfortably enjoy the spectacular 2014 Kaohsiung Countdown Fireworks Show against the backdrop of the nighttime harbor scenery, the Kaohsiung Harbor Ferry Company will operate two sightseeing cruise trips on the evening of the 31st. This enables people to avoid the crowds and admire the dazzling 214-second fireworks display over Dream Mall from the beautiful Kaohsiung Harbor this year.

The annual countdown event at Dream Mall in Kaohsiung has always been one of the city’s highlights as the year draws to a close, and the highly anticipated fireworks show was recently unveiled. This year’s fireworks display will last 214 seconds, featuring 103 variations created by a mix of pendulum-style and fan-shaped fireworks, with more vibrant colors and patterns than in previous years, set off above the Ferris wheel and Blue Whale Pavilion at Dream Mall.

Zhang Qingquan, chairman of the Kaohsiung Harbor Ferry Company, said that the “Countdown Fireworks Sightseeing Cruise” has been running for three years. Watching the ever-changing, breathtaking fireworks display from the sea in Kaohsiung Harbor not only helps avoid the crowded countdown festivities but also allows visitors to enjoy the charming night views of the harbor. As a result, as soon as booking opens each year, spots sell out instantly, making tickets hard to come by.

The 2014 Countdown Fireworks Sightseeing Cruise will feature two trips: the “Glory” and the “True Love.” The “Glory” departs at 11:30 PM, and the “True Love” leaves at 11:40 PM. The two cruises have a total of 260 seats, with each trip lasting 30 minutes. Tickets are priced at NT$150 each, and onboard guides will provide commentary on the human history and harbor developments of Kaohsiung. Phone reservations for the two cruises will open at 9:00 AM on December 12 and run until 12:00 PM noon, with a limit of six seats per person and bookings accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until sold out.
