Ginger Duck, Little Duck’s Girlfriend Turned into “Duck Head Balls” — A Money-Grabbing Frenzy by Keelung Harbor

The little duck in Keelung arrived earlier than expected today (20th), drawing crowds of onlookers ahead of schedule. Local businesses have been well-prepared with a wide variety of little duck merchandise, hoping to cash in on this wave of "yellow fever." In addition to an array of goods and food items, some vendors have turned the little duck into a "ginger duck" plush toy, while others have made it into a bouncy, round rubber ball. Roles such as Ginger Duck, Little Duck’s Girlfriend, and Lucky Little Duck have also been created, creating a dazzling spectacle.

Everything from little duck hats, little duck fans, little duck umbrellas, to little duck keychains — various daily-use items flood the shops around Keelung Harbor. Among the most hilarious are the vendors selling the “ginger duck series,” who say these ginger ducks not only carry a distinct Taiwanese flavor but are also perfect for the cold winter season. Aside from the ginger duck version turned into a “bouncy ball,” the original little duck hasn’t been spared either. There are also Christmas-themed little duck girlfriends and New Year’s lucky little ducks, all becoming duck head balls for kids to toss around. Vendors claim these are made from natural rubber and are free of plasticizers.

Nearby bakeries and patisseries have also embraced the little duck craze. From small desserts and lemon tarts to chocolate mousse and six-tier cakes, all feature little duck designs. The entire area around Keelung Harbor is engulfed in “yellow fever,” showing that the little duck craze is not only driving tourism but also generating significant revenue. Shop owners say sales surged after the little duck made its appearance today, but it remains uncertain whether the merchandise boom can continue through the rest of the exhibition period.
