No less stunning than Yehliu ! Keelung’s three scenic spots have been included in the North Coast National Scenic Area since 2013.

Starting in 2014, the North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area will incorporate new sights. After evaluation by professional scholars, three beautiful landscapes in Keelung City — Heping Island Park, Waibushan Coast, and Lover’s Lake Park — will be added to the national scenic area.

Heping Island is located in Zhongzheng District, Keelung City, and is famous for its marine erosion landscapes. It is accessible from downtown Keelung via Heping Bridge and is one of the earliest places in northern Taiwan to have seen Western footsteps. The Waibushan Coast can be described as Keelung’s longest natural shoreline, and its sunrise view is also a rare beauty. Due to years of erosion by seawater, the coast also features various uniquely shaped rock formations. Located on the mountainside of Dawu Mountain, Lover’s Lake Park is Keelung’s only highland lake. The park is equipped with facilities such as observation decks and suspension bridges, allowing visitors to fully enjoy the beauty of the mountain forests while traveling through the woods.

The North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area Administration stated that after scholarly evaluation, these three sites — in terms of geology, hydrology, flora and fauna, and historical relics — have all been recognized as being of national scenic quality. Among them, Heping Island boasts landforms that are “no less stunning than Yehliu,” and Keelung was once home to several military bases, featuring many historic battery sites. Therefore, it also offers the potential for unique cultural and historical tourism development.

The Tourism Bureau estimates that once officially incorporated, the North Coast Scenic Area will stretch from Tamsui in the west to Keelung in the east, and the scenic area will also be able to develop a variety of leisure tourism routes with diverse styles.
