An unprecedented new housing experience: A former U.S. nuclear missile base transformed into an Airbnb

A Cold War-era military base in Kansas, USA, has now been converted into an Airbnb accommodation option called Subterra Castle. For travelers seeking thrilling and unique lodging experiences, this place is truly one of a kind and well worth exploring.

According to Lonely Planet, this abandoned base was actually a nuclear missile military facility during the Cold War, but fortunately, it was never used in warfare. Later, it also served as a base for a space program. Twenty years later, this approximately 5,500-square-meter underground space was transformed into an underground villa.

This once heavily guarded military base has unexpectedly been transformed into a bohemian-style castle (Subterra Castle). It features numerous rooms and musical instruments where guests can play music, as well as a greenhouse, among other amenities. Notably, all the decorations draw from various religious traditions. Beyond its highly inclusive decor, there’s also an observation tower offering views of a pond, landscaped gardens, and a temporary aircraft runway.

Thanks to Airbnb, travelers now have the opportunity to spend a night at such a unique historical location. This is an almost unprecedented new lodging experience that chain boutique hotels simply cannot offer.
