Sword Lake Mountain New Year's Eve Fireworks: Entry Banned if 3,000 Cars & 100,000 People Gather

Yunlin’s Sword Lake World is launching what it claims to be Taiwan’s longest New Year’s Eve fireworks show, with a 610-second display synchronized with its iconic Ferris wheel. Due to the tens of thousands of visitors the event has attracted in previous years, causing severe traffic congestion, the local Douliu Police Precinct has decided to implement vehicle-person separation controls this year. Entry into Sword Lake World’s parking lot will be closed once 3,000 cars are parked, and access to the Gukeng mountain area will be restricted when the crowd reaches 100,000 people, all to prevent traffic gridlock.

Sword Lake Mountain’s New Year’s Eve fireworks have become a major countdown hotspot in central Taiwan in recent years. In past years, huge crowds flocking to the mountain on New Year’s Eve caused severe vehicle backups, leaving many stuck in their cars counting down to the new year. To avoid a repeat, the Douliu Precinct will begin traffic control at 2:00 p.m. on Dec. 31. The amusement park’s parking lots have 3,000 spots each for cars and motorcycles, and 50 for large tour buses. Once full, vehicles will be diverted to surrounding roads including Provincial Highway 3, Yongguang Outer Ring Road, and Zhongshan Road in Gukeng Township.

Police stated that once the amusement park parking areas are full, 10 additional traffic control points will be set up, with barricades installed at intersections. Aside from local residents, private cars and large vehicles will be barred from entering the mountain area. If the number of people in the mountain area exceeds 100,000, entry will be further regulated as needed. Sword Lake World management noted that the peak entry time is around 8:00 p.m., advising visitors to arrive early to avoid traffic congestion.
