Creative!\NDEgg-fried lamp and 9-meter streetlamp as the main creative light at Tainan’s Moon Lake Lantern Festival

A different kind of lantern festival!\NThe Moon Lake Lantern Festival in Yanshui, Tainan City, kicks off on January 25, featuring 22 large artistic light installations this year. Among them, the eco-friendly LED main light “Sunlight Domain,” standing 9 meters tall and made from 241 discarded outdoor streetlamps, will be erected next to Shuiyue Bridge. Visitors will be greeted by this “giant creative piece” right away.

This year’s Moon Lake Lantern Festival adopts the theme of “Saltwater Riverside Scroll,” inviting art teams from across Taiwan for the first time to create various light installations that showcase the interplay of light, shadow, water, and moon. The exhibition period has been extended from 20 days to 37 days, ending on March 2. The main light lighting ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. on the 25th at the Shuiyue Bridge stage area, and at 4 p.m. that afternoon, the Japanese Bamboo Orchestra will perform in front of Yongcheng Theater.

The main light “Sunlight Domain” was created by the design team “Luxury Fantasy Workshop.” It utilizes old streetlamps retired by Tainan City and transforms with different visual projections in sync with music. From afar, it resembles the phases of the moon; while “Zheng Yue Jian” by Japanese artist Mizutani Atsushi is a giant fried egg-shaped installation that looks adorable.

Other works in the lantern exhibition include 22 large-scale light installations such as “Mirror Flowers and Water Moon,” “Bamboo Fire Path,” “Riverside Feast,” and “Zheng Yue Jian.” The Tainan City Cultural Affairs Bureau stated that the lantern festival is not limited to the Moon Lake water area but also extends to surrounding neighborhoods, including Qiaonan Old Street, Beidi Temple Front, Yongcheng Theater, Yiyin Alley, and Wangye Temple Alley—making the entire Yanshui town shine with colorful light art.
