On a sweltering summer afternoon in Tainan, stumbling upon an especially traditional ice shop is too good to miss. With options like pudding red bean milk snow ice and mulberry milk snow ice, the wide selection of icy treats makes you wonder: which flavor will you choose to beat the summer heat today?

Nestled right by the main road, Long Xing Ice Shop features a bright blue, slightly old-fashioned signboard that piques your curiosity about its classic, ice-cold delights. As I stared at the menu above the counter, I felt like a kid standing in front of a soda fridge, unsure of what to pick—there were just too many choices, and I was struck with a sudden case of indecision. The shop owner smiled and said, “How about trying our fruit snow ice? It’s really good.” “Sure!” I eagerly pointed to the one that caught my eye the most. The first bite brought an unexpected burst of joy. The taste was refreshing, but I also sensed something subtly familiar. “It’s a bit too light for me on this hot day,” I thought. The weather was so warm, yet I couldn’t quite embrace such a mild flavor.

Watching the owner swiftly prepare the shaved ice, drizzle toppings and condensed milk—each step was simple yet skillful.

Pudding Red Bean Milk Snow Ice – NT$75Whenever it comes to eating snow ice, the allure of red beans and milk is simply irresistible. Sometimes, if you’re feeling a bit more indulgent, adding a piece of pudding takes the experience to the next level. The pudding was delicious, and the red beans were soft, though their aroma could have been stronger. Unfortunately, I felt the condensed milk was a bit lacking that day, making the overall taste somewhat bland—so we paid an extra NT$10 for more condensed milk. The price did seem a little steep, but the portion was perfect for two to share.

Mulberry Milk Snow Ice – NT$70So how about trying the fruit snow ice recommended by the owner? We both really loved this mulberry milk snow ice, made with a generous helping of mulberries and shaved ice, then topped with condensed milk—a surprisingly delightful new flavor. The mulberries were sweet with a tangy twist, offering a uniquely refreshing taste that’s perfect for hot summer days.
