Global Internet Speed Report: South Korea Remains on Top, Taiwan Ranks 5th in Asia

Staying connected while traveling is convenient and fast, but nothing is more frustrating than sluggish internet that leaves mobile users anxious. According to a report released by a U.S.-based cloud service provider on Q4 internet speeds last year, South Korea had an average connection speed of 26.1 Mbps, retaining its global No. 1 spot; Taiwan’s average speed was 15.6 Mbps, ranking after Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan, placing 5th in Asia.

According to a report by the Philippine ABS-CBN News, U.S. cloud service provider Akamai collected and analyzed internet speed data from various countries. In Q4 of last year, the global average internet connection speed rose slightly by 7.9% compared to the previous quarter and increased by 44% year-on-year.

South Korea retained its position as the world leader in internet speed with an average of 26.1 Mbps. The rankings were as follows: Norway (23.6 Mbps), Sweden (22.8 Mbps), Hong Kong (21.9 Mbps), Switzerland (21.2 Mbps), Denmark (20.7 Mbps), Finland (20.6 Mbps), Singapore (20.2 Mbps), Japan (19.6 Mbps), and the Netherlands (17.6 Mbps).

In Asia, aside from South Korea leading globally, Taiwan ranked 5th in Asia with an average speed of 15.6 Mbps, following Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan. Additionally, Thailand had an average speed of 13.3 Mbps, with other rankings including New Zealand, Australia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, China, India, and the Philippines.
