Two of the most common problems among mainland Chinese tourists — have you made these mistakes too?

During the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, mainland China saw a tourism peak with tens of millions of travelers heading out. According to mainland media observations, there are currently two major tourism-related issues among mainland tourists, especially noticeable in hotels and scenic spots. Local tourism authorities have also put up additional signs and implemented 24-hour patrols to monitor such behavior, reminding the public to help maintain a good travel environment.

In recent years, China’s National Tourism Administration has been promoting civilized tourism. However, Xinhua News Agency reported recently that issues among mainland tourists resurfaced during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, with the most prominent uncivilized behaviors being taking excessive food at buffets but eating little, and littering indiscriminately.

For example, when dining at buffets, some tourists adopt a “get my money’s worth” mentality, piling their plates with various dishes from the buffet line, yet end up leaving most of the food uneaten. Only a small number of tourists actually finish all the food they take.

Another major issue is littering in scenic areas. In tourist spots such as beaches and mountainous regions, it’s common to see unfinished food, leftover drinks, fruit, bread, and even chicken wings that have been taken a bite out of and then discarded.

To help preserve the scenic environment, local tourism authorities in mainland China have assigned staff to patrol key routes 24 hours a day during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, aiming to guide and educate tourists through service and persuasion.
