What comes to mind when you think of Kagoshima? Use the “JR Kyushu Pass” to explore Kyushu affordably

What comes to mind when you think of Kagoshima? If you answered “black pork,” you’re definitely a foodie at heart. If you said “volcano,” then you’re surely a seasoned traveler.

This old smoker in Kagoshima, known as Sakurajima Volcano, is one of the few active volcanoes left in the world. It has erupted more than 700 times over the past 100 years, and the massive eruption in 1914 was so powerful that the volcanic ash it produced connected Sakurajima — originally an isolated island — to Kagoshima.

Thanks to the geothermal activity from the volcano, you can even dig your own foot onsen at Aria Beach here. Just keep digging into the sand, and you’ll uncover warm seawater. Sitting on the beach soaking your feet in the hot spring while gazing at the ocean view is quite the trendy thing to do.

Because the volcanic ash is extremely fertile, Kagoshima grows some of the world’s largest white radishes and oranges.

By using the newly launched JR Kyushu pass, you can choose to fly directly to Fukuoka, head south all the way to Kagoshima, and then fly straight back to Taiwan from Kagoshima Airport, or even extend your trip to Miyazaki. This gives you greater flexibility and better deals when planning your itinerary.
